In 1904 Jane McKenzie petitioned the government for a grant for this 200 acre parcel located at the end of Garry Road in Middle River, Cape Breton. The surveyor, in 1904, found that the applicant had improved the property "to the extent of 40 acres with a farm house and barn, said improvements worth about $800.00." The surveyor noted on his plan that a "gold mine, quartz vein" was just east of the brook that crosses the field (I didn't find it - now the adjoining land is part of the Middle River Wilderness area and no mining activity is allowed). The surveyor charged $16.00 for the two day survey and plan.

The house and barn are gone and the fields have been reclaimed by the forest. A portion of the white, pasture spruce that grew in the old field has been harvested (About 10 percent of the property has been logged in recent times).

A brook that begins in the mountain immediately east of the old farm site flows down to the old field area and then disappears (for much of the year). Above the old field area the brook flows year around. I have been told that gravel company checked this area a number of years ago and found a large gravel deposit likely accounted for this disappearing stream.
